Insight Timer phone app

Secular monasticism. That is “The Way” for me as Monk Ken, living in the day to day mundane world, as a householder, and involved with various projects. My main project is outreach & support and empowerment for families living with severe mental illness. Back on March 09, 2017, some five years ago, I began to use this phone app (Insight Timer) to aid my meditation practice. So far I have use it for 1876 days. Today is a milestone of sorts (200 consecutive days). This is tricky because there have been the odd days during which I am “busy and distracted” with the life issues or a car trip, with something out of my routine, out of the ordinary which allows me to forget to use the app until just after midnight. I am a bit of a nightgown. Then, alas, I have missed using the app that day. Long ago I flirted with TM, Transcendental Meditation. They recommend meditation at regular times in the day and twice a day. This requires a certain degree of devotion, dedication and perseverance. Self-mastery, if you will. Today I am celebrating 200 consecutive days.

Compassion

In the Buddhist religion, a Bodhisattva is also known as a “Buddha of Compassion.” Kuan Yin is such a famous version of a bodhisattva. Kuan Yin is well known here in the West. Today I gave a talk at my church called “Assemblage of Arete,” in which we strive for the good life and a life of excellence. The theme today was the Aim of Compassion. Please note that as Monk Ken, I am also in the Paracelsian Order.

Autumnal Equinox

This Autumnal Equinox season (September 22, 2021) is called “The Great Passing.” This is the most sublime of the initiations. Theosophically it is written from the Lomaland community that existed in San Diego, CA: “Death is rebirth on a higher sphere.” Our life-atoms each find their proper path for further experience through almost innumerable transmigrations. From Ancient Egypt, Orisis is one key for understanding the journey of various centers of our human consciousness in the spiritual “obligatory pilgrimage.”

Here is a concise and insightful modern video story about this, titled “The Egg.”

Full Moon February 26, 12021 HE

This was a day of considerable reflection and contemplation for me personally.  Various endings were in mind and heart.  The 40-acre parcel of land which was designated “Live Oak Monastery” land was sold after a bit over nine years of being in my stewardship.  There were many threads and connections, relationships connected to that property.  Initiation into the Unnamed Path had occurred there for me in 2012.  Additionally, my own beloved mother passed in December 2020, and I was honoring her memory this day by strolling around the Greenwood cemetery in San Diego, CA.  Here is a short video of ravens at Greenwood that day. In this evening about midnight, I held a brief fire ritual to burn some old photos of that 40 acre land mentioned above.  Many endings.

Anthropologically, there are some interesting folk-beliefs about cemeteries and ravens.  The tales range from Japan to Scandanavia, central Europe and beyond. Taken from a folklore website: In Sweden the call of the raven after dark was interpreted as the howl of torment of a murdered soul.  Meanwhile, in Germany and Denmark, they were associated with the damned or even the devil himself. The raven shares this dubious honor with blackbirds and crows, whose appearance has also been associated with impending death. In both Japan and France, there is the association with birds as psychopomps, helping transport the spirit or soul of the dead into the afterlife.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2021

Born on January 15th 1928, Martin Luther King, Jr. was an iconic religious and social activist leader in the United States of America. He was the most visible spokesperson for the Civil Rights and Black-American rights Movement in the 20th Century. He was lauded, and yet quite humble, a visionary. Monday the 18th is the US Federal holiday named in his memory and his honor. We are moving toward a very preliminary spiritual stepping stone along The PATH. Perennial Wisdom of Humanity recognized this PATH. That early stepping stone for us as people, is recognizing, living with, and creating that nucleus of the Universal Personhood of all Humanity. Christianity is commonly known and practiced here in the USA, and one of the two great laws / rules taught by Jesus in his ministry is here quoted from New Testament of the Bible, book of Matthew 22:39 “….Love your neighbor as yourself.” Sharing some of my photos from Kit Carson Park in southern California this day.

Meditation Moment Movie

Here in San Diego’s Balboa Park, there is a beautiful spot called the Japanese Friendship Garden. It has gone through several upgrades and improvements over the decades. Here is a short video clip from one of my many trips there to share with you for a contemplative moment of centering and peacefulness. Please focus your mind upon your own breath as you listen and enjoy. This is the beginning of mental concentration type of meditation, called dharana, or one pointed concentration of your attention.
